Emerging Technology

Course Information:
There is an enormous spectrum of Information Technologies currently being used, which encompass computer hardware and software to store, process, and securely transmit information in the forms of digital medium, such as magnetic and optical disks (HDD, Blu-ray Disc). The information is communicated through voice and sound or images using microphone, camera, speaker, and cellular phones through wired and wireless/satellite networks. As IT tools continue to grow, professionals require a good understanding of the underpinning technology, how it is used to create new devices, and what drives the development of new technologies; as this knowledge provides a strong foundation for anticipating future technological trends.

Description:
This unit is to use popular computing technology to provide you with an understanding of the basic architectural and functional structure of systems. By exploring computing devices you will gain a fundamental understanding of computer hardware, operating systems, application software, networks, cloud computing, web services, and social computing. The content of this unit is structured into three (3) main modules: introduction to technologies, evolution of technologies, and case studies in emerging technologies. The emerging technology case studies investigated will change each semester to focus on contemporary topics, such as in-vehicle technologies (e.g. driverless car), 3D graphics, and sensors network. The objective is to provide a broad understanding of these technologies and their impact.

Recommendation and Rating:
Exercise on practicals as many as possible, it requires lots of understanding - 6/10

Recommended study time per week:
5 hours a week

Helpful Resources:
There is no prescribed textbook; there will be readings from chapters in online books. (These will be made available through the QUT library and the course material database.) You will be expected to read widely from online resources to gain a good understanding of emerging technologies.
